Multiple outlets are reporting today that downtown Portland’s Greek Cusina has closed its doors. The restaurant, located on the corner of SW Washington and 4th Street, has been a part of Portland history for decades and is well known for their food, night life and of course the giant purple inflatable octopus on the outside of the building.
The Greek (as it is commonly known) has been in the news multiples times in the past few years. First, the owner was vocal about his opposition to the growing food cart scene in Portland. More recently the restaurant has been in the news for fire code violations and a 2009 order to shut the restaurant down for failure to comply with city codes.
Furniture was apparently moved out of the restaurant today and KATU is reporting that the purple inflatable octopus will be taken down on Monday, January 4th. The reason behind the business shut down is unknown at this time.

It will not be missed by me. The one meal I had there was one of the worst I ever had.

I always thought the place was okay…not bad, not great.
I can say I wont miss that purple octopus….not the kind of landmark I want our city known for.
This is sad, sad news for myself, my family and many of my friends. The Greek will be missed.
As a visitor to downtown Portland, that purple octopus has anchored me for years so I always know where I am and which way to go when I see it.
I went once and wasn't impressed. My wife's meal was terrible, mine was nothing special.
Food was and has been horrible for years.
I cannot say anything about the place as a restaurant, and yes the purple octopus is iconic — but as a night club? GOOD RIDDANCE. Every time I played next door at Kelly's (now Knife Shop) there were police there or about to be there. Nothing but loud obnoxious drunk idiots raging with male ego and testosterone.
