wash-dot-building-a-road-out-of-styrofoamThey say you can’t make a mountain out of a mole hill, but the Washington state DOT just made a road out of what is basically Styrofoam. It’s called Geofoam and it makes up most of the new ramp in front of Safeco field that goes over the railroad tracks.

“This is a light weight foam similar to the material that makes up a coffee cup, a Styrofoam cup,” said David Sowers with the DOT. “But it’s produced in large, very dense blocks.”

    how is this environmentally friendly?

1 truck load of Geofoam will fill the equiv. volume of 12 trucks of dirt fill. That's fewer trucks on the road. Geofoam also allows for a unique road design that would never be possible due to underground utilities and poor soil conditions. This project will reduce congestion around the stadiums. and to boot, in a 150 years they can dig the thing up and recycle 100% of the EPS, re-mold and install it on your roof for insulation.
