A boil water notice is in effect for the City of Portland west of the Willamette River and customers of Palatine Hill, Burlington and Valley View water districts until further notice.

All water used for drinking, teeth brushing, food preparation, and ice should be boiled at a full rolling boil for at least 1 minute as a safety precaution. Ice or any beverages prepared with un-boiled tap water should be discarded.

On Thursday, routine water sampling results from Reservoir 3 in Washington Park indicated the presence of Escherichia coli, commonly known as E. coli. On Saturday, results from a resample of Reservoir 3 water indicated the presence of E. coli in the reservoir. The reservoir was taken offline and is being drained, a process that can take up to 4 days.

Further sampling has been conducted throughout the affected area to isolate the source of contamination. The public should follow boil water precautions until the bureau receives updated water quality results and notifies the public that the water supply has returned to a safe condition.
