A little bit of New York’s famed Broadway is in Portland this week as the hit musical Rent performs at the Keller Auditorium. Originally debuted in 1996, the show is now part of the Broadway Across America tour, bringing some of the last century’s greatest shows to over 40 cities from coast to coast.

This particular show is even that much more special because two of the original cast members have returned to lead the crew. Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp star in this story of young people in New York dealing with life, love, careers and even AIDS.

Perhaps a sign of the economy, tickets for remaining shows are still available. However, if this economy has you tightening your belt, Rent has something special for you. It is a tradition to save an undisclosed amount of front row seats to every show, on sale 2 hours before opening, for just $20 each. Fans are known to line up hours before hand so be prepared for a fair fight and long wait to score this deal. All other tickets may be purchased via TicketMaster or at the Keller Auditorium box office and are reasonably priced, starting at just $20.

The production is truly professional and it is easy to see why it was such a huge hit in New York and London over the years. The performers are top notch and the talent extends beyond the two original stars. One standout was Lexi Lawson playing the part of Mimi. She may not have the best voice on stage but she makes up for it with her acting ability. Reading deep into the playbook we learn that she was a contestant on the most recent season of American Idol, but left early for the opportunity to perform in Rent. She is the surprise star of the show.

A special note to the men reading this. If your wife or girlfriend wants you to take her to Rent, don’t be afraid. Yes, it’s a musical, but it’s a damn good one. At the very least you have a few beautiful women to watch on stage, one naked ass and a number of swear words. It’s not bad. Take her and have a good time.

Enjoy this wonderful opportunity to experience a little bit of New York right here in Portland.
