blount_1I just witnessed the most awful show of poor sportsmanship I have ever seen. And it came at the hand of a University of Oregon Duck, someone from my alma mater. After the Oregon Ducks were embarrassed by Boise State during the game, they embarrassed themselves and all of their fans after the game. Famously hot-headed LeGarrette Blount, starting running back for the Ducks, answered some taunting and a shove on the shoulder with a right cross to the chin of BSU’s Byron Hout. Blount followed up that embarrassing act by fighting with his own teammates that tried to calm him down before being escorted off the field by a group of players, coaches and police.

First, my apologies go to BSU and their fans. You earned a good win which should not be overshadowed by a stupid move like this. Congratulations to you for a great game.

Now, on to Blount. As an Oregon fan and alumni, I demand that he be kicked off of the Oregon football team immediately. The way he acted tonight was not only illegal and un-sportsman like, it does not represent what the school is about. His selfish and immature actions tonight put the fate of the season, and the other 100 some players, in jeopardy. There is no excuse. Right now, I am embarrased to be a Duck.

Blount not only disrespected a worthy opponent, he disrespected his teammates, coaches and authority in general. A sucker punch alone is bad but one can recover from the bad press by blaming emotions and the like. No team, nor player can recover from among each other and against law enforcement.

If Duck fans ever want to hold their heads up high and brag about their team in the future, they need to do the right thing now and demand Blount’s removal. If the Ducks ever want to step on the football field again, against Boise State or anyone else, and be able to focus on the game and not on an immature cheap shot from their lowest common denominator, the team too should demand his removal.

Okay Chip Kelly, show us what kind of head coach you are. You too, Bellotti…be an AD that will make us proud.

Update #1: (Friday @ 2pm PST) The University of Oregon has suspended Blount for the entire 2009 season, including bowl games. He will still participate in practice and will remain on scholarship.

Bottom line is , there are duck fans who think it’s totally awesome that Blount punched Hout, and ten years from now they’ll recall it quite fondly. I won’t. I think it’s sad for Blount as a player, and much more importantly, as a person. If there are duck fans who don’t feel that way, there’s nothing that anyone can say here that will change that. They are as irrational as Blount was at that moment. Even if Hout was thier own son they would give Blount a free pass because he plays football or the U of O. For that type of fan, the ability to discern right from wrong in these situations is forever lost. Don’t waste your time trying to convince them, just understand that’s the way it is.

it was more than a "pat on the shoulder." the boise st. player was obviously taunting him. i'm not saying that excuses the punch, but get your story straight. the boise st. coach was even pulling his player away to scold him.

    • Jmartens says:

In comparison to the retaliation from Blount, it was a pat on the shoulder. Football players get pretty amped up, Hout’s taunting was mild compared to what goes on any given Saturday.

    • Jim1974 says:

Thats right but the coach had the player under control! There was no point he was under control. Also your the visiting team and going at the fans thats a danger to every duck player there. I'm tired of people bringing up the other player what he did happens at every game! The difference was that he was n't out of control, after the commemts that Blount made before the game he couldn't expect that he wouldn't hear a little about it but punching another player, his teammates, going at fans, his coaches, and cops come on.

  10. DuckFan says:

Get off your high horse. That guy kind of had it coming. You don't slap/push a player on the chest and talk trash and get off scott free, because that too is horrible sportsmanship. I am not saying what Blount did was appropriate by any means, I am just saying let's not forget who started the altercation.

    • Jmartens says:

There is a time to stand by your team and a time to admit that your guy was wrong. This is one of those times where Duck fans need to stand up for what is right, not for the guy that happens to wear our jersey.

Making excuses will for the guy will only make this worse. This is a big deal, and should be.

    • Unsportsmanlike says:

Typical UO fan response. You shouldn't have commented at all.

    • Steve McKeon says:

I think you miss the point DuckFan because the haymaker Blount threw was possibly the least offensive thing he did. I would rank (a) instigating a fight with your own teammate or (b) going after a fan, as more severe transgressions. The combination of all of them in the same episode is why people are up in arms. This was the opening game of the college football season, and so I suspect it had a much larger audience than normal UO games. I live about 2,000 miles away from Eugene in a fairly small town in the Midwest. Guess what people around here were talking about today: LeGarrette Blount. Total number of times I have heard people here talk about UO football prior to today: once (when a local team played UO). This episode will be associated with UO for a long time. There is little question that the only appropriate response is outright expulsion.

  11. lookout says:

agree 110 percent! He should not only be suspended from Oregon indefinitely he should be suspended from the NCAA entirely. That includes all divisions. Playing college football is a privilege and he has had too many chances to get his act right. Let the NFL take their chances if they want to, but he is a total embarrassment to collegiate athletics. If Kelly plans on keeping his job long he will make the right choice.

  12. Mr Dave Hanson says:

this action is making people say negative things about Oregon. No matter what he did, the effect is negative for the University and the state.

  13. DuckFan says:

I agree that what he did was wrong, but I have seen much worse with lessor punishment than you are suggesting. He most definitely should be suspended, but I don't for a second believe he should be kicked out of the NCAA permanently as you feel. That doesn't make me a homer, It makes me mediatory.

    • csmith says:

I disagree, since Blount is a scholarship student he should loose his scholarship and be kicked out of NCAA football. the last thing college football needs is to start allowing this kind of behavior like they have overlooked in the NFL. What is next High School..

  14. Mr. Bridge says:

I think you're acting a bit out of emotion yourself. Did you want Brooks kicked off the team when he KO'ed Apple Turnover from UW?

The guy clearly taunted him, even his own coach was trying to pull him away.

Blount acted stupidly, yes. But lets not be as quick to act as he was. There have been plenty of punches thrown (and landed) in college football. None of them were okay, but lets make sure that Blount learns from this and becomes a better man. Lets not toss him out in the street. There are better ways.

I would think that someone of your pedigree would see that.

    • Jmartens says:

Taunting or not, it doesn't matter. It was out of line and un-called for.

What I hope you noticed is that for me, it was fighting with his own teammates, coaches, the fans and even cops that put me over the edge. Yes, punches have been landed before. But I've never seen a player go on to scuffle with police on the field.

Lets also remember that Blount has had second chances. This isn't his first screw up. When is enough, enough? For me, it is now.

    • Son of Oregon Alumni says:

This issue is more about Blount's behavior after punching Hout. A couple of tough guys having a one punch altercation is not the issue. Blount disrespecting ALL authority is the issue. If this type of altercation happened on a city street, the police would have thrown him in jail and the person who he punched would have pressed charges. Blount is a thug - plain and simple - look at the problems Oregon has been having with him. Blount needs counseling! I hope the University of Oregon understands that and gets him some help! He should not even be allowed to practice with the team. He should be kicked out of the school! How embarrassing!

  15. Paul says:

Came across this via Stumble, watched this happen live. I'm a Texas fan, so no bias either way. To me the bigger deal was him going after some people in the stands and either right before or after that, can't recall, he seemed to take a swing at what appeared to be a police officer.

  16. Guest says:

The guy is a thug and should be off the team and off the college. Oregon should be ashamed to have him on their team or on their campus.

  17. Mr. Bridge says:

To each his own, enjoy your crusade.

  18. Mr Dave Hanson says:

Players are acting out and acting like gladiators. At some point winning became more important than winning the right way. The coaching staff shouldnt be putting out of control players on the field. The NCAA will be handling the punishment in the "blount blowup." I blame Blount for losing control, but I also blame everyone who failed to prevent this from happening. Blount most likely didnt become a monster overnight and this is probably not a big suprise to some, the real problem is the people that sat back and ignored the previous outbursts and let it get to this.

  19. CFB fan says:

Dude does that in Baton Rouge, Tuscaloosa, Gainsville, Morgantown, or Knoxville he may not make it out in one piece. If you think the fans at Boise are rough you haven't seen anything.

  20. fan says:

what if it was the n word?

  21. serge2010 says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaswbYnf8Sc&fe...

see this clip to see what actually provoked blount to go after the fans… or was it one fan in particular?

the guy with the sunglasses on his hat.

yes… what we see is the "n" word that set blount off.

    classless, on one end.

  22. barack obama says:

Don't worry he will not get kicked off the team. obama will interceed

  23. Sports Fan says:

The NCAA should ban him for the season. University of Oregon, regardless of what the NCAA does should immediately kick him off the team for good.

  24. Peter Smith says:

you should get the full story, first. Hout was talking trash _and_ he touched Blount. why on earth would you do that if you weren't looking for a fight? the punch was fully justified.

  25. Barbara Galbraith says:

If it was the "n" word, then he got what he deserved…..but it was still out of line. The guy was clearly out of control - punching his own teammates, going after fans (here's an idea - if you think they're throwing chairs at you, go the other way). He just needs to be off the team. Period. Anything less just doesn't cut it.

  26. roger says:

Football mental discipline he should have had that before it got to this level. Bad news

  27. Duck Alum says:

I agree with other comments that you need to get off your high horse, and get some perspective. It's a stupid football game. He embarrassed the university, sure, but I don't think you are in any position to DEMAND anything. I think the University's response is adequate.

Besides, anyone who has spent any time around college programs with disproportionate attention and money spent on athletics already knows that the "student" athletes are a special class of citizen, one to be pampered and coddled. They bring in too much money from alumni (like our self-righteous author here) to be kicked out of school. You paid your money, you got your degree, now let them run their "business" as they see fit. That's what your Alumni dues pays for, anyway. If you don't like it, stop giving money.

  28. DDG - alumni says:

I don't care about who provoked whom, or even what the provocation was. There should be standards of discipline for anyone representing the U of O, as well as their sports team. Discipline and standards of behavior are not just a good idea when it is 'easy' to do. They are most important under pressure. This guy can't take pressure. That makes him a bad team player.

  29. Avery Hanyd says:

I am saddened by the fact that he is not expelled from the university. That is the very least that should happen. He is a disgrace to all of us.
