Blackbox Republic takes the wraps off tonight from what’s arguably Portland’s boldest startup.

I wrote about Blackbox in July, when the company outlined its vision as an online watering hole for the “sex positive” community. The company’svision has evolved some since then, but the mission is still clear: Create a new kind of social network for an adult crowd.

Their goal is to create a members-only, fee-based alternative to social networking sites like Facebook and online dating sites like Match.com. Think of it this way:

Facebook is the broadcast TV of social networking, where the masses gather for (largely) family-friendly fare.

Blackbox Republic hopes to be Showtime, a premium alternative for adults where the conversations may be franker and more risque. “Red Shoe Diaries,” and all that suggests.
