Terry Johnson does photography as a hobby, and he has done this hobby for most of his life. Since retiring a few years back Terry has been able to travel a lot with his wife Lee, and on each vacation he takes hundreds upon hundreds of photos.
One group of photos taken shows all the different lighthouses of the Oregon Coast, one of their favorite places to visit. Another group shows Arches National Park, a recent venture they took for a week. Terry takes photos of everything. His family is a group that is definitely not camera shy.
Since retirement, Terry has joined the many ranks of people over the age of fifty who have become well versed with the internet. He is completely self taught, but is always trying out new things. He even joined Facebook recently, but doesn’t quite have the grasp of Twitter… yet. Two things Terry has become a master of are Adobe Photoshop and website hosting. He maintains a website called ‘Johnson Family Adventures,’ which is specifically dedicated to Terry’s photos and travels. On this website he also includes a special portion featuring astrophotography he had done several years back, some of which was published in a few well known astrology magazines. One look at them and you can see the work that went in to each shot.
What started then as a hobby has now turned Terry into quite the local celebrity. At his sailing club, all the members know that if they need a photo of themselves sailing, or one of their boat, Terry is the guy to call. The popularity of his website; www.tj622.com, has sparked Terry to do more than just take photos. Last year Terry even made an attempt at creating full sized posters as well. His enthusiasm of the Oregon Coast Lighthouses led him to design a few different photographed collages, the final product which turned out better than he had originally anticipated. Unfortunately, he couldn’t find a local retailer to distribute them.
When the Lighthouse posters didn’t work out quite as planned, Terry started creating fully illustrated and photographed Travelers books. These books were geared at those interested in learning more about or visiting the Four Corners region of the United States. With a combination of scenic photos of the sites combined with those he had taken on the local trails hiked with Lee, Terry meshed his own unique writing styles with the maps and pamphlets he had collected around the local area. The result was several well thought out and visually stimulating coffee table novelties. Single handedly Terry had now created the caliber travel book that one could buy in the Four Corner’s area abroad or more locally here at Powell’s or Barnes and Noble. Unfortunately, Terry is running into the same problem he had before and is having trouble getting publishers to notice his work.
“I had several publishers write me saying they would take a look at it, but nothing solid,” He told me. “A few of them didn’t even write me back after I sent it to them for review.”
Still, this lack in feedback from the commercial suppliers isn’t hindering Terry’s interest in creating new books, posters and other ideas. He is always open to creating new products, and isn’t letting anyone discourage him from doing so. He enjoys making them.
Terry will keep creating new books and showing his current books with pride. “If I find a publisher who takes an interest in my books, that’s great. But if no bites, oh well. I make them for myself and my family.”
