A 62 year old Vale, Oregon man was killed last night after the car in which he was riding struck a cow on Interstate 84 approximately 30 miles east of Baker, Oregon.
On September 25, 2009 at approximately 11:00 PM, a 1996 Lincoln Continental sedan was traveling eastbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 336. The Lincoln Continental was driven by Donald HODGE, age 57, of Vale, Oregon. Seated in the right front passenger seat of the sedan was Gary GLASCOCK, age 62, of Vale, Oregon.
Shortly prior to the crash, a cow had walked out onto the eastbound lanes of the Interstate. The cow was struck by at least four vehicles before the Lincoln Continental operated by HODGE reached the area. The four vehicles that had struck the animal pulled off onto the shoulder of the road and stopped. The cow, which was by now deceased, was laying in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84 and was struck by the Lincoln Continental.
After hitting the cow, the Lincoln Continental rolled onto it’s top and came to a rest partially blocking the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84. GLASCOCK, who was wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene of the crash. HODGE, who was also wearing a seatbelt, was transported to Holy Rosary Hospital in Ontario, Oregon for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The eastbound lanes of Interstate 84 were closed for approximately 1 1/2 hours while emergency crews investigated and cleared the crash. Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing their investigation into the crash. OSP was assisted at the scene by personnel from the Oregon Department of Transportation and deputies from the Baker County Sheriff’s Office.
