Death, Taxes and the Portland Timbers
Spring has sprung, the deadline for income tax returns has come and gone, and there’s a Timbers game this weekend. There couldn’t be a more perfect combination of events to celebrate with a massive tailgate and a serious kicking out of the jams? To be followed, one hopes, by a Timbers victory over the Rochester Rhinos, who ended the Timbers’ unbeaten streak last season.
A great deal happened during the off season, and not just within the team’s personnel and players. Outside the organization, a group of Timbers Army members were researching and creating the 107 Independant Supporter’s Trust. The nonprofit, board-managed trust seeks to become the greatest supporter organization in American professional soccer, and there can be no question that they have a shot. Based on similar organizations in countries where football gets all the attention, the 107ist is dedicated to spreading the gospel of soccer to the Portland Metro Area. Go join immediately.
The Rhinos started the season with a draw against Miami FC. The Timbers open their season basking in the warm glow of a win away against the Seattle Sounders during their pre-season warmup.
Come on out and see a game this season. Few things in life are certain, but for Portlanders, the Timbers are a sure bet for a great evening out.
