We may never know why or exactly when Mike Zerwas went out to his backyard.
His neighbors can only guess that he went out to fill the bird feeders or to check on one of his two cats who live outside. Maybe he was going to do a little gardening.
But sometime between Thursday evening and late Saturday night, the earth opened beneath the 57-year-old private investigator’s feet and he fell into a 35-foot deep, water-filled, brick-lined pit.
