The 6th installment of Ignite Portland has a little twist to it: tickets not required. The organization announced on it’s blog today that they have decided not to issue tickets for the upcoming event; a first for the Portland chapter of the world wide phenomenon.
For past events, organizers made 500 tickets available on a first come, first serve basis through its web site. Tickets have always been free but were used as a sort of RSVP. Tickets for Ignite Portland 5 were all spoken for within three and a half minutes of being available at igniteportland.com. So this year, the event is ticket free. Yes, that means you don’t have to be in front of a computer during a short 3 minute window to snag your ticket, but it will at least mean a long line and maybe even some overnight camping.
Ignite is a community event that lets non-professionals have 5 minutes on stage, with no more than 20 presentation slides to convey their point. To make things more interesting, event organizers advance the presentation slides automatically every 15 seconds. Topics at previous Ignite Portland events include: “Not your Grandma’s Game: Why You Should be Playing Bridge,” “The Secret History of Fonts You May Not Know Before” and “A Short Introduction to Cyborg Anthropology.”
The next Ignite Portland is July 16th at the Bagdad Theater in Portland. The venue holds approximately 500 people and overflow seating will be provided at the Back Stage Bar with a live video feed. Some if the IP6 presentations include: “The Scandalous Lies I’ve Told My Children,” “DIY Healthcare in Portland” and “Sauna Etiquette: Proper Decorum Amongst Naked, Sweaty Strangers” just to name a few.

That stinks, I'll be working out of town during that time…but I couldn't get in online last time. I'd rather stand in line.
